Oahu, Hawaii – A Unique Vacation Off the Beaten Path

There are often two kinds of travelers: those who want to hit the big highlights, and those who want to get off the beaten path and discover their real destination. You can find the popular tourist attractions anywhere on the internet, but here are a few tips for exploring and enjoying Oahu in Hawaii that only locals and frequent visitors know.

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet — Hunt for bargains every Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday at Aloha Stadium.

Ahui Street Fish Market — Local chefs bargain for the fresh fish every morning at 5 AM.

Diamond Head Beach Park — Below the crater of Diamond Head, this beach is usually less crowded than the rest of Waikiki. It is especially good for windsurfing and snorkeling. Swimming conditions are poor, however, because of the coral reef.

Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden — This beautiful nature preserve on the windward coast of Oahu features a variety of native plants and trees, a lake, and hiking trails.

Kalapawai Market at Kailua Beach — A good place on the windward coast to get fresh coffee and pastries (adjacent to Kailua Beach Park on Kalaheo Avenue). Awards for some of the best Hawaiian comfort food. A sunrise walk on Kailua Beach— rated as one of the best walking beaches in the United States—is a treat because it is almost deserted.

Kapiolani Park — Created by King Kalakaua in the 1870s, listed on the state’s Historic Register for its exceptional trees. Visitors can picnic under the stars in this park located close to the Waikiki Shell. Performances are offered for free at the outdoor amphitheater. It is also a place to fly kites, play tennis, and watch rugby or soccer.

Leonard’s Bakery — The Honolulu bakery features malasadas (Portuguese doughnut like pastries). It opens early in the morning.

Mauna Kea Street, Chinatown — Some of Honolulu’s best fresh flower leis can be found in Chinatown’s shops.

May Day, or Lei Day — Known as Lei Day across all the islands, celebrating local culture.

Punahou Carnival — The private school’s carnival offers a little of everything—rides, games of skill, international food booths, an art gallery, and a theater. It is a real treat for youngsters.

Puu Ualakaa Park, Mount Tantalus — Vantage point with a spectacular view of southern Oahu from Diamond Head to the airport.

Waikiki Aquarium — known for its live coral exhibits.

Zippy’s — A combination fast-food chain and casual dining restaurant in various locations on the island, featuring local specialties, famous for its apple and coconut turnovers.
