K-Macho’s: Authentic Mexican Food – Just Over the ‘Border’ (in Kansas!)

Looking for excellent Mexican food at a great price? K-Macho’s just might be your new favorite, too!

We like food. My husband, especially, has an appreciation of Mexican food. Recently, through recommendation of one of my students, I heard about a restaurant over on the Kansas side: K-Macho’s. Long story short, we have a new favorite for Mexican!

Welcome to K-Macho’s!

K-Macho's Patio
K-Macho’s patio is bright and welcoming

K-Macho’s is quality, authentic Mexican. Chatting with our delightful server, she revealed that even those who work there, eat there – on their time off! You know it’s good when people will come back to where they work after a double shift, just because the food and the people are that good.

We showed up right as they opened at 11:00 to avoid crowds and because -honestly- we were hungry! The hostess seated us on the patio outside, festooned with authentic Mexican decor. Instrument-playing metal frogs, brightly colored banners, and colorful pots full of plants create a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Having traveled in Mexico as I grew up visiting my grandparents, I felt right at home.

As soon as we sat, our server brought out chips and salsa, both freshly-made and flavorful. I’m a bit of a salsa snob, and K-Macho’s is quality salsa. It’s the kind you want to take home with you!

K-Macho’s Menu

K-Macho’s appetizer menu is bursting with unique culinary offerings, especially when compared to your run-of-the-mill Mexican spot: Nachos al Carbon, Queso Flameado, K-Macho’s Steak Sticks. We went for Poquito de Todo (a little bit of everything!) – of course! – and not only were we impressed, but we realized it could easily fill a group of 4 – let alone 2! I’m primarily vegetarian, and Blake is decidedly not. With “a little bit of everything,” we both enjoyed bites that we like. Unfortunately, we devoured it before I could snap a picture. Guess we’ll have to go back!

The rest of the menu features an impressive variety of quality soups, salads, platters, carne asada, grilled offerings (de la parilla, on the menu), fish, and seafood. They have a wonderful lunch menu and sides.

What was most impressive to me as a vegetarian is that I was able to have a meal I thoroughly enjoyed and could eat that wasn’t just “finding something” on the menu. (Usually a lame salad of some kind – am I right, fellow vegetarians?). K-Macho’s has a Veggie Quesadillas Platter, Chile Relleno, Veggie Burrito, and Veggie Enchiladas Platters, as well as Veggie Fajitas loaded with quality veggies. These come with vegetarian cilantro rice and black beans (not cooked in lard). These plates aren’t just something they throw together. They are legitimate, quality platters designed to cater to the needs of their vegetarian guests. I was impressed.

The Veggie Enchiladas Platter comes with corn tortillas – I was even able to easily avoid gluten, without having to ask for a special meal to be made. It was nice to go to a Mexican restaurant and be able to eat something flavorful and prepared to meet my dietary needs.

K-Macho's Mexican Vegetarian Platter
Veggie Enchiladas Platter – it was HUGE. The picture doesn’t do it justice!

My husband’s experience was just as stellar – aside from the fact that he was admittedly full after finishing off the appetizer! Blake always goes straight for the Fajitas – and he said K-Macho’s Fajita Beef is among the best he’s had. That’s saying something! I did taste his beans and rice (for your sake, dear reader), and I can attest to their flavor and quality. They were not the bland, watered-down sides one often finds at some establishments. They are quality sides in their own right.

Two Locations

K-Macho’s has two locations: one in Overland Park (where we visited) and one in Olathe. With a menu as varied and enticing as theirs, I can guarantee we’ll be back!
