How to get TSA Pre-Check (It’s easier than you think!)

Now more than ever, as travel opens back up post-COVID, TSA Pre-check provides travel benefits. Travelers with TSA’s Known Traveler Number do not have to remove items from bags, while all other travelers do. Read the TSA’s official updated procedures HERE.

I felt like I was getting shown up when I found out that my mom and my 85-year-old grandma have TSA Pre-check and I, the Travel Consultant, did not. So I hopped online to make my 15-minute reservation.

Why do I Want TSA Pre-Check?

The 5-year, $85 membership, allows passengers to move quickly through security without removing your shoes, laptops, liquids, belts and light jackets. About 200 airports and 67 airlines participate in TSA Pre-check. (So far, I haven’t personally run into a major airport that doesn’t.)

For older people like my grandma, that means being able to travel with confidence and a more predictable experience. For frequent travelers like me, it provides a convenient, more efficient screening process.

What do I need to register?

To register, you need documentation showing you are a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident. My son and I both used our unexpired passports. You can also use your driver’s license and birth certificate. Here is the list of document options. The registration fee is $85, payable at the appointment.

Where do I go?

There are centers all over the United States, both inside airports and in off-location sites. In Kansas City, the TSA has recently opened a NEW, more centrally-located office in Gladstone. We went there during its first few days open to get my son’s Known Traveler Number and we had it within two business days! You can find the site nearest you by entering your zip code here.

What happens at the appointment?

I was right on time for my appointment, so I got right in! The attendant took my passport, asked to enter my social security number in a key pad, verified my address, took electronic fingerprints (honestly – the hardest part. You have to press down really hard on those things!), took a quick picture, and done! I paid my $85 fee and he told me I should receive my Known Traveler Identification Number (KTN) in the mail soon – and I did.

I received my KTN the next business day by phone and within 8 calendar days by mail – what an efficient process! My son received his within 2 business days by email (out of the new office) and by the 3rd business day in the mail.

Once I received our Known Traveler Numbers, I added them to my Southwest account, which will automatically attach TSA Pre-Check to my flights. It works the same for other carriers, as well – just remember to enter the number!

As for the application & registration process, it can’t get much easier. I’m looking forward to not having to take off my shoes anymore!
