Gift-giving is a part of many holiday celebrations. But how to find a unique gift? And what to give the person who has everything? While there are are many tried and true experiences during the holidays in Kansas City, here are 6 unique gifts you might not have thought of!
1. The Gift of Cooking Together
The unique gift of a cooking class in Kansas City is perfect for those who enjoy or want to learn how to cook, bake, barbecue, or prepare a feast. The instructors at the Culinary Center of Kansas City have years of experience and some are from top restaurants in the Kansas City area. Their classes range from single session classes to multi-day courses and encompass a variety of cooking styles and cuisines.
I’ve taken 3-day courses and single sessions, but my favorite is to gift my friends and family members a class and attend with them! One year, my Mom and I bought cooking classes for one another for Christmas – we both attended a Tuscan Feast class for “her” Christmas present, and a Thai Cooking class for “my” Christmas present. It’s a win-win!
2. The Gift of an Afternoon Tea
The gift of a themed tea party is a unique experience for friends and loved ones who enjoy a cuppa hot tea and good conversation. In Liberty, Missouri, afternoon teas are held in the historic 1913 home of Brenda Hedrick, owner of Anna Marie’s Teas. Tea parties include tea (of course!) and 3 courses, including savories, scones and sweets. Guests are shown to their assigned tables and served by the tea ladies, who make the rounds to ensure everyone’s cup stays full.
Brenda’s monthly themed tea parties are a fun and unusual experience – one that my mother and I enjoy. It’s nice to be served and be able to sit and just chat for a while with nothing else on the agenda. An afternoon tea has become something we try to do each month!

3. The Gift of Throwing Sharp Weapons at Walls
Looking for something different? You can gift your loved ones the opportunity to go throw axes at a wall! Who’d have thought that this would become a thing? Seriously, though – my husband and I went to Blade and Timber in downtown Kansas City for an afternoon date and had so much fun! (Especially my husband, who was much better at it than I was!). The staff will explain everything to you, from stance to throwing techniques, to scoring. Then, it’s a matter of who can throw it best? With a beverage and grill menu available, it’s kind of like bowling – but much sharper. Here’s what to expect:
Up in the Northland, Liberty’s WoodChux offers a similar experience (with another center in Excelsior Springs). In Overland Park, (where Blade and Timber also have a location), Bury the Hatchet even offers ax-throwing leagues! See? It really IS like bowling. Kinda.

4. The Gift of Gun Safety Classes
Another opportunity for a unique gift in Kansas City is a gun safety class. From beginners to the most advanced firearms enthusiasts, anyone who owns a firearm can learn something new. Classes – run by specialized, trained instructors – focus on safety, use, and care of firearms, as well as fine-tuning individual skills.
Frontier Justice (with locations in Kansas and in Lee’s Summit) offers a wide range of gun safety classes. Over in Blue Springs, Target Time Defense (owned by a former Marine) hosts classes operated by Lamb Firearm Training. Range memberships are also available at both locations and make a great gift!
5. The Gift of Travel
