Molokai & Lanai, Hawaii – A Unique Hawaiian Vacation

The smaller islands of Molokai and Lanai (which can be seen on a clear day from Makapu’u Lighthouse Point on Oahu) are, themselves, off the beaten path. While many visitors to Hawai’i deplane and stay in O’ahu or Maui, a short inter-island flight or boat ride takes travelers farther from the commercialism and deeper into iconic Hawai’i.

Here are a few tips for exploring and enjoying the islands of Molokai and Lanai in Hawaii that only locals and frequent visitors know.

Molokai

Molokai Hawaii

Coffees of Hawaii — This coffee farm in Kualapuu provides tours in mule-drawn wagons as well as an informative look at the processing operation. A large plantation-style shop and espresso bar offers samples of the specialty brews.

Kamuela’s Cookhouse — Known for its homemade pies, plate lunches, and burgers. It gets crowded between noon and 1 PM.

Mapulehu Glass House — A large, impressive hothouse, more than three-quarters of a century old, filled with orchids. The Glass House is located fifteen miles (24 km) east of Kaunakakai.

Molokai Drugs — A selection of books and locally made gifts are featured at this Kaunakakai store, including original cards by local artists.

Lanai Hawaii

Lanai

Blue Ginger Café — The café in Lanai City offers fresh baked goods and local-style plate lunches and has indoor and outdoor seating.

Hotel Lana’i — This plantation-style hotel is a place to eat and to meet people. Check out their famous mud pie. It is a good place to take the family.

Kahekili’s Leap — A rocky outcropping on the southwest coast where warriors had to prove their bravery by diving into the waters below, the birthplace of cliff jumping.

Luahiwa Petroglyphs — South of Lanai City, the boulders have some of the island’s best rock carvings, including depictions of human figures, deer, turtles, and canoes.
