Travel Advice from Our Wiser Selves: What We Wish We Had Been Told

I asked some of my friends “If you could give one piece of travel advice to your younger self, what would it be?” All connoisseurs of travel in its various, beautiful forms, here is what they had to say:

Travel Abroad.

travel advice: travel abroad

Study abroad, travel even when your kids are young, although souvenirs are great, photographs are cheaper and help to hold your memories better! –destinationswithhart

I should say, maybe you should go studying in another country. –timwasintown

If I were young again, I would participate in an international exchange program, and take a gap year to travel. Also, prioritize experience over acquiring processions. -Shianguu Hsieh

Be Trip Savvy

travel advice: visit local markets

Don’t check a bag!! Always carry on! -Ingrid Zarins

Seek out and shop local (farmer-type) markets. Chat with the local vendors and ask for recommendations. Most people are usually happy to share, and I’ve not yet had a bad tip. -Karen Hudson

Make sure you are in most pictures and keep on traveling! –tenacious_verve

Leave Time for Leisure.

Dont try to plan every detail, it will never go exactly that way. Just make a list of things to do and pick the ones off that list that work out the best each day❤️. –wegalavanttheglobe_

Be purposeful scheduling in time to just relax. See the sights, but don’t fill every minute with something. You should never return home feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation. – Jeremy Lee

Keep your schedule a bit loose to allow for extra time at a given area, and reduce stress of tight time frames. Ask locals for suggestions, especially about local cuisine/restaurants. Try new things. – Cheryl Gilgour

Explore Before You Settle Down.

Travel now before you have kids and travel while they are still young and do it before getting bogged down with a house, you can’t replace memories but you can houses and cars. –travelwithguchis

Travel is a Quality Investment.

travel advice: it's worth the investment
Kath and I upon landing in O’ahu –
long flight, but so excited to be here!

Travel by air to experience the beautiful of the world and by sea to experience nature. –alvinli44

It’s not as expensive as you think and it’s totally worth it so go farther. –andrea._.capone

Go! Work, save, whatever you need to do, and make it happen. Travel brings the best experiences! –rebekahlmiller

If a parent really wants to travel and get that experience with their kids that’s going to last a while, my travel advice is that it’s good to start when they are young. – Joseph Abarr, age 17

Travel More.

Self, travel more, sooner…. -Kathy Essert

Do travel nurse life with an RV! I so wish we had an adventure van or RV for more flexibility in travel and lodging. – Leigh Ann Zerr @leighannzerrcopy

Travel more! –journeywithjblog

More than anything, my friends had one resounding theme: Just go.

Just go! My mom is very protective, and I missed out on many opportunities to travel around the world because I was too scared of being away from her 🙂 – agrammarnerd

Just go and don’t worry about the money. Don’t worry if it’s a short trip. 48 hrs is better than staying home. –danamarieand3

Just go. I say it now and I wish I had known those simple words back then. –texaskidsadventures

Find a way and just go! –littlehumblings

I have been fortunate. Most years of my life I have been on at least one, if not multiple, vacation. Travel brings me joy. It draws my family together without all of the responsibility, stress, and busy-ness of “regular life.”

My travel advice? It echoes what many of my friends say here: Just Travel. Travel with those you love. Travel Often. Don’t wait – tomorrow is not guaranteed, but those memories you make with your loved ones while traveling will last a lifetime. Travel Now.
